Winter is just around the corner which means it is time to start thinking about the winter flora you need for your outdoor space. The flowers you choose to liven up your garden over the next few months can really lift your mood, so fill those stone garden pots to your heart's content!

It is important that you add greenery and life to your garden during the colder months, as it will help prolong the eco-system that supports many birds and insects. During autumn and winter, the flowers you choose need to be ones that are suitable for the weather. So, what will work best for you? Let’s take a look.

Calendula

Calendula are long-lasting flowers and from late fall through spring, they provide colour to your garden. Moderate water and complete exposure to the sun is required by calendula flowers. As long as you provide them good drainage, calendula flowers will bear many soils.

Viburnum x bodnantense

Featuring sugar pink flowers, Viburnum x bodnantense are wonderful plants for the winter. In order to keep these flowers under control, pruning is required. Also, partial sun or full sun is what Viburnum x bodnantense may need, so keep them out of shady areas.

Candytuft

Clusters of pure white flowers are perfect for colder weather. They grow about eight to twelve inches high and maintain their shiny and narrow dark green leaves for mot of the year. This flower thrives with regular watering and part shade. In order to stimulate new growth, prune Candytuft plants after bloom and use well-drained soil for them.

Lonicera x purpusii

Comprising of lemon-scented flowers, Lonicera x purpusii are like honeysuckle plants. They do require room to spread and need both shade and sunshine to blossom so choose your spot wisely! Stone garden pots mean you can move your plants around as necessary with ease.

Snowdrop

Snowdrops will blossom when others are faltering in the winter chill. However, they prefer to hide away under taller hedges and in rock gardens – so keep them, sheltered and out of the way. A great addition to your winter garden!

Cyclamen

Not many flowers blossom like cyclamen during the winter. The flowers are pretty and come in different shades including red, rose, pink and white. Furthermore, they have a very attractive cluster of leaves, adding life to your garden when it can often look barren and lacking in colour.

Hamamelis intermedia

If you prefer a touch of red in your garden then Hamamelis intermedia are great flowers to plant during the winter.

There you have it—the best winter flowers that will work wonders in pots and borders alike. For more information on the best stone pots and troughs, please browse our range today.

Your home garden is a place in which you can put your heart and soul. It can become an addictive hobby and an active pastime that will produce incredible results. While many people use their gardens to create a small kitchen garden with flowers for beauty and serenity, others choose to create their own fairyland or a sanctuary where they can relax and play and have a break from their hectic lifestyle or work life. What will you choose?

Designing and landscaping your garden might take a lot of time but when you let nature have its way, you will end up with a shabby, chic garden or backyard which will blossom under your care. There are many ways in which you can update your home garden. While garden statues and stone seating can be exceptional choices to add beauty and eccentricity to your garden, here are some other ways to update the look of your garden easily.

Step into the Stone Age

Create a romantic, ethereal place for you to sit in while you relax with your family, read a book or have a drink with friends. A cute nook is a perfect way to add a functional but inspired element of décor to your garden. Stone seating which is surrounded by greenery and shrubbery can be an effective way to update your seating arrangement outside, too. What's more, the stone is impervious to weather or any other harsh elements making it an ideal long-term investment that adds a touch of rustic class.

Rack-A-Hammock

There is nothing more relaxing than a lazy afternoon, napping in your own back garden in a hammock. Even if you are not blessed with perfectly lined and placed trees, you can easily make your dream of having a hammock come true by adding a wooden pergola or a hammock stand.

Cage the Trellis

Add a little fairytale element to your garden in the form of a little fence gate; entering your garden with a sense of secrecy and the anticipation of better things to come. This is perfect for homeowners who want to separate their driveways from their private gardens. Choose to separate your arbour with a gate and surround it with trellis and shrubs creates an elegant look that suits all homes and garden designs. A shorter gate is ideal but if you want to block the view completely, choose an intricate wooden design with metal hardware to create the perfect look.

Adding Life to your Garden

There are a number of plants and trees that attract wildlife to your garden. If you want to create a magical place for your kids to play around in, invest in plants and flowers that are inviting for insects, birds and bees. If you wanted to go all out, you can also include a little pond with stone hedging to create your own little natural habitat inside your garden.

Buffet Dining

Most homeowners have a love affair with having dinner parties outside. Why not invest in a fire pit or a pizza oven that will encourage you to be more creative with your outdoor cooking instead of just using the BBQ again?

There are a lot of options for durable and sustainable outdoor furniture options and patio chairs that can be decorated with colourful fabrics to provide a comfortable place to eat your freshly cooked meals.

For more information and tips for improving your garden, please browse the rest of our blog and website.

Adding a few trinkets, lighting and plant pots are not enough to completely transform the look of your back garden. However, there are many other ways for you to change the entire aesthetic of your garden – people won’t believe it’s the same space! Keep reading to find out how.

Plants and Stone Ornaments

If your garden is in need of some colour or life, you can invest in a variety of plants that are different to the ones you would usually choose. As well as offering respite while working on your garden, they require very little upkeep and maintenance.

Light the Way

Another great way to add a whimsical touch to your garden is to add perennial hanging lights. The reason is simple; they are not only fun but also offer a useful function, too.

With the official start of autumn out of the way, our minds turn to preparing our much-loved gardens for the upcoming few months. Soon, the days will be growing shorter; the winds will become more intense with a little more bite and leaves will fall.

The colder months of the year do not mean we have to put down tools and give up on gardening, though; far from it. Instead, we show you how to make use of garden troughs and stone pots to keep your outdoor space feeling alive and kicking this season.

The nature of the upcoming season – crunchy leaves littering the lawn and flowers bidding us farewell until spring, means that we have the perfect opportunity to make a few changes and keep the garden looking alive and well this autumn.

Along with a handful of other tips for ensuring your garden makes it through to spring in one piece, we show you how to make the best use of those stone garden pots and troughs.

While many people avoid adding compost until spring, buck the trend and add it now – if yours is ready, that is. Not only will this give your soil plenty of time to absorb nutrients, but it will mean any drier spells in spring aren’t too detrimental to the success of your garden.

Be aware of the wildlife that exists in your garden. Many birds and small creatures rely on your plants and garden to survive, which is made harder as we head into autumn and beyond. Leave as many plants standing as you can, for as long as you can to ensure they have plenty of food in supply.

Avoid the temptation to dig over your garden now – holding off until spring will naturally retain as many nutrients as possible during the colder months.

Now, with your garden prepared for the colder weather and ready for next spring, there must be something you can do in the meantime to give your garden a little oomph? Of course, there is!

Make use of garden troughs and stone pots – not only are they strong, sturdy and a stylish addition to your garden, but when filled with evergreen’s and autumnal blossoming flowers and plants, they will add an injection of life into your outdoor space this season.

All garden troughs and more bought from Tor Stone are weather treated and protected to ensure that your garden can look beautiful and alive all year round without worrying about the impact of colder weather on your features.

For more information, please contact our team today on 01458 834320.

Regardless of your generation, the people that planted the gardening seed in our brains is, more often than not, our grandparents. This September, celebrate Grandparents Day by honouring their passion or pastime passed on, spending time in their gardens with them or working on your own - safe in the knowledge that it would bring a smile to their faces.

Different Ways to Celebrate

Here at Tor Stone, we are big fans of anything that gets people more involved in their outdoor space and gardens. Whether this is by working a vegetable patch, installing a water feature or simply enjoying the fruits of their labour on a traditional stone garden bench, we love it all – and we know your grandparents would, too.

How will you celebrate this year?

Quality Time Together

Spending quality time with your extended family is few and far between these days, often reserved for the holidays, birthdays or special occasions. If you’re in need of some quality time and don’t want to wait until the next family get-together, invite your grandparents over – or visit them, and spend some time indulging in a favourite hobby with them.

Family Tree

Getting to know your family tree is something extra special, no matter what your age. Spend a little time investigating your own – speak to your grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family to ensure that no stone gets left unturned. Celebrate your research findings by inviting the family over and planting a tree as a symbol of your family unity in the garden.

Place of Remembrance

For those of you that have loved and lost, remember your grandparents with their own spot in your garden. Sit upon stone garden benches and recall those memories from childhood – the Sunday dinners with the whole family; the summers in the garden, picking fruit from the trees and helping grow sunflowers; and enjoy their memories.

However you choose to celebrate or remember your grandparents this September, get out in the garden and enjoy the last of the late summer sunshine. Soon, those stone garden seats will be too cold for your morning cup of tea and will be relegated to being an unused feature of the garden again – until spring breaks, of course.

Our team here at Tor Stone are on hand to help assist you with any queries or questions you might have. For all your garden feature needs – stone seats, garden pots, sundials and more; you know who to call – 01458 834320.

When you think of stone sculptures or garden statues, your mind might race with stock images and stereotypical examples like proud English Lions, cheeky gnomes or medieval grotesques and scary stone gargoyles. If you’re more classically inclined, you might think of Greco-Roman gods lined up in their birthday suits, striking strong poses and depicting scenes from ancient myths and legends.

All of these are very valid examples, and look great in gardens of varying shape and size. However, there is so much more potential when it comes to adorning your outside space with something special. See a few unusual examples, below.

Be Inspired by… the First Emperor of China

How they did it…

Qin Shi Huang (the first Emperor of China) is famous for a lot of things, but one of his most recognisable and lasting monuments? The Terracotta Army.

This vast terracotta force, built to protect the Emperor in the afterlife, has stood proudly since the 2nd century BC and still fascinates us today. The warriors, chariots and horses that remain of the (estimated) 8000 strong army are arranged in height order, according to rank. Each soldier is unique, and they were all made in parts, before being assembled. A phenomenal project, even by today’s standards.

Now your turn…

Follow in the footsteps of the great Emperor and have an Umber Terracotta Warrior of your own; nestled amongst oriental plants he will look great.

Be inspired by… the Prince of Monaco

How they did it…

The Prince of Monaco’s official residence is one known to many, for all sorts of reasons. Some will be enamoured by the love story of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly; others will know the palace as the backdrop to many of the world’s most exclusive casinos, and yet more will know the palace’s central role in Monaco’s history, architecture and tourism.

Outside the palace, though, amidst everything else in the stunning Mediterranean Principality, is a statue of Francesco Grimaldi disguised as a monk. This statue pays homage to the Genoese leader who first captured the Rock of Monaco in the 13th century; disguised as a monk with a small band of men, he made it through the gates and seized the rock for four years.

Now your turn…

Channel your inner Monegasque with a Grimaldi-inspired stone statue for your garden. You can choose from Saint Anthony or Saint Francis of Assisi, and either have him pride of place in the centre of your patio (just like the palace) or tucked amongst greenery or flowerbeds.

Be inspired by… Kings & Queens of Country

How they did it…

Nashville (Tennessee) is the home of good barbeque, great music and a surprisingly diverse population of statues. From bronze figures in memory of great jazz, blues and country acts dotted around the green spaces in Music Row, and the path of giant guitar statues around the city, to the giant bronze Musica statue in Buddy Killen Circle – Nashville is home to all kinds of statues.

Some more famous examples include the bronze horses outside of the Starstruck Entertainment building (40 Music Square West), where Reba McEntire used to frequent, and the impressive full-scale replica of the Parthenon in the city’s Centennial Park. Oddly enough, in a bustling and musical city, this great copy of the classic Grecian monument doesn’t look out of place – even with a life-size Athena.

Now your turn…

Bring a little bit of Music City back home with a stunning black granite pony or a wild and free running horse, or turn on the Southern (Grecian) charm with a Greek themed wall plaque or a statue of a Grecian maiden or goddess.

Mix up your outside space with a unique choice, and draw your inspiration from near and far – be it cities giving a nod to their heritage or people giving their own take on culture and diversity.

Incorporating stone seating into your garden landscaping can make for a great hideaway, whether you have a vast lawn to add interest to, or a cosy courtyard to make even cosier. You can take your pick from great traditional or contemporary styles, with a whole host of materials available, offering plenty of flexibility when it comes to exterior design and decoration.

Read on for just a small selection of the kinds of things you can do with some quality stone seating in your garden, and use it as inspiration to revamp your outside space.

A Quiet Corner for Reading…

When it’s cold and drizzly outside, especially during the winter months, there is nothing better than snuggling up in a cushy armchair, with a cup of tea and a good book. What do you do in the summer, though? You relocate…outdoors.

A stone bench is a great place to stretch out and laze in the sun as you turn the page, or somewhere to enjoy a sandwich as you flick through your favourite classic. If you want a quiet corner to escape to, try one of our curved or straight benches tucked in amongst some sweet fruit or olive trees, or go quirky with a saddle stone.

Alternatively, if your garden is less mature, you can create your own private spot with garden troughs full of tall perennials like Oriental lilies or a Miscanthus; a stunning organic screen to hide behind.

A Top Spot for a Tipple…

Curved benches like the Hadley or Medici are great if you plan on entertaining in a classy but casual setting. You can place two or three around the edge of a patio or circular flowerbed, so everyone can mix and mingle amongst a lovely floral fragrance.

If you want a closer knit setting, you could always opt for a coffee table set. Position it as the focal point in the middle of your borders – you could even construct some form of temporary outside bar (see ideas, here).

Having grape vines and olive trees in and around the seating area not only adds a little something to the sights and smells of the patio but also lets you impress guests with a fresh olive in their martini or a sip of homemade wine.

An Al’Fresco Extension…

Taking part of your home outside is a superb way to extend your living space and make the most of the summer evenings, starry skies and fresh air.

Don’t think you are limited to just the summer months, though; nice weather in the UK can extend all the way into October on a good year. Don’t forget, when the mercury drops, you can make your al fresco extension cosy with cups of tea, big woolly jumpers and blankets, along with an outdoor heater or fire pit for those nippier nights.

Imagine: friends and family gathered around our Grand Patio Suite. There will be candles on the go or string lights up, hot drinks and comfort food (maybe bowls of chilli or homemade stew), an outdoor heater and a selection of “guest blankets” from your garden blanket box. You can laugh, share stories, count stars and enjoy good food and good company – all year round.

Now, the sky is the limit when it comes to creating your own oasis, complete with stylish and comfortable seating.

You might want a pixie-meets-hippie paradise with lights strung up, lots of wildflowers and a timber effect bench to chill out on. You may prefer a tea-party-friendly garden with a seating area fit for Alice in Wonderland. You may even like the thought of keeping things clean and simple with our Slimbridge Set.

Whatever your style, stone seating is a great place to start when furnishing your garden. Check out our range to see what suits you best, or get in touch to talk about your vision in more detail.

The beauty of outdoor space is that, often, you are working with an entirely blank canvas to put your mark on – allowing you to create your perfect garden from the ground upwards. There are so many different ways of achieving this today that it isn’t surprising at all that more and more people are getting involved in the world of gardening.

For some, gardening is done with ease; with natural green-fingered abilities shining through. For others, there are a few more hurdles in the way – such as patchy lawns that will not grow and chalky or sandy soil. However, this is easily remedied with the use of stone garden pots and trough planters.

Creating beautiful gardens is easily done with a little perseverance and problem solving!

As well as providing home-owners with a flexible and dynamic way of gardening that poses very little threat to your physical health, there are many other benefits to using stone pots in your garden.

Place the pots where you want, when you want! You can move them around so easily that you can find which placement works best for each plant

Pests are much easier to control when using smaller pots opposed to flowers beds

More difficult-to-grow plant varieties can be planted in a soil that is specific to its individual needs

Using pots in the garden allows you to be much more adventurous with gardening, without the need to invest a significant amount of time into the process. Further to this, it is ideal for first timers and those who are slightly inexperienced.

So, what are the best plants to get you started?

Azaleas are very impressive on the eye but are easy to contain in a pot

Calla Lilies are delicate, elegant and graceful which will work perfectly against the starkness of a stone pot

Chrysanthemums are a hardy flower that thrives well in cooler weather, giving colour for much of the year

Dahlias are a delight in containers and troughs and are available in many different colours to suit your floral needs

Lavender is an excellent way to attract wildlife and insects to your garden, give off a pleasant scent and can add height to any floral arrangement

Roses are one of the most popular flowers around and look perfectly made to sit in garden pots

Tulips are ideal for growing in pots outdoors, especially in the colder climes found here in the UK

We provide a variety of stone planters and troughs for your needs here at Tor Stone.

If you are looking to make some improvements to your garden, then you’re in the right place. Keeping your lawn maintained and in good condition can be a full time job in itself, but there are other ways and means of guaranteeing your outdoor space looks as good as it makes you feel.

You can choose to add stone ornaments or features as a focal point. You can add a variety of evergreen, all-season flora and foliage to add some colour, and you can differentiate sections of the garden for different purposes.

Outdoor Decoration

When it comes to ornaments and décor for the outside of your home, garden statues are up there with some of the best. While the plastic flamingos and kitsch garden ornaments of days gone by have had their moment in the spotlight, it is the statues, icons and elegant stone structures that remain on the must-have list.

The trend of extending interior design into our outdoor spaces and gardens is one that has come into its own over the last few decades. With more and more people having an aesthetic vision of what their garden should look like, the more common these focal elements now are.

Ornaments in History

While garden ornaments and statues are commonplace today, this was not always the case. While the obsession with statues is believed to have started with the Greek Gods – (find out more about this here), there is history behind each and every garden ornament today.

Many of the elements we see in gardens these days, including gnomes and water features all stem from fashion trends around the world. However, it is the newer finishes and building materials that breathe new life into the more traditional garden features, transforming them for a modern world, to reflect current trends.

It is becoming more and more common for people to invest in their outdoor space, converting it into a liveable and usable space all year round. With the addition of a few key pieces – a garden statue to draw your eye towards the delicate pond flowers or a stone bench blending seamlessly into the perfect reading spot beneath your favourite tree – you too can reap the benefits.

Looking for garden inspiration? We have a broad range of statues, ornaments and gnomes available, please browse our website or contact us for more information.

There is a certain amount of our parents in our personality, and a lot in the way we look, but their influence is just as far reaching when it comes to the things we enjoy and how we raise our own families. With Father’s Day coming up on June 19th, we take some time to reflect on how much our Dads have done for us in life.

Many of the things we enjoy in life are influenced by our parents, family and those around us when we were growing up. This could be a fascination with films or music, an active interest in sports and competition or something as simple as reading a book in the garden and enjoying the quiet, calming effect of the outside world.

So, when you’re looking for that something special for Father’s Day this year, why not give a gift that will keep on giving, for many years to come? Garden ornaments, stone seating and water features are all part of what makes a nice garden great, and makes for a wonderful addition to his happy place, too.

While tending allotments and cultivating a garden isn’t as ingrained into the everyday lives of our generation, our parents were very much involved in growing their own vegetables and this has stuck with them over the years, culminating in a deeper connection with the great outdoors, and gardening in general.

With summer on the approach, why not do something extra special for your first hero in life? Whether your Dad is a keen gardener, a fan of rugby, cricket or snooker, or simply prefers to relax and enjoy life from the comfort of his favourite arm chair, there is always an easy way to bring a smile to his face.

Give your Dad the gift of a helping hand with his garden or allotment. A little hard graft and bonding time on a new gardening project is a gift that you can’t put a price on. Giving your dad something to look out of the window and smile about is something that money can’t buy.

Stone seating will give him somewhere to sit and collect his thoughts, catch up on his favourite novel or have a well-deserved break from tending the veggies. A stone water feature is a gift that will bring valuable movement and life into his garden respite. Garden ornaments and furniture are stylish, aesthetically pleasing and practical – what more could you ask for?

With so much on offer here at Tor Stone, you can’t go wrong when it comes to finding your dad the perfect gift this Father’s Day.

We are all protective of the things we own, especially when it comes to homes and gardens. After all, we have invested time, money and love into them so they deserve some extra care and attention.

These days, we put up fences, gates, and even security cameras to protect our homes from physical threats but traditionally this role would be left in the capable hands of stone gargoyles.

Where do stone gargoyles come from?

While less prominent than they were previously, stone gargoyles can still be found on older buildings and medieval architecture across the country, adorning churches, cathedrals, and even houses across Western Europe.

Gargoyles often take the form of humans, animals and beasts or grotesque and, traditionally, had two main purposes. The first was to protect the building from physical harm from water, with long necks and open mouths directing water away from building foundations. The second was to scare away evil spirits.

Then and Now

Stone gargoyles were very popular on important buildings in the medieval times, but these days they are much more frequently seen in homes and gardens. The designs today are much more statuesque in nature and are often more comical to look at than scary.

They can be used in your home and garden with the purpose of directing water away from your home or as a focal point and something interesting to look at.

It is believed that winged gargoyles were best for larger homes as they would fly the perimeter at night, warding off evil spirits before settling back down before sunrise.

Here at Tor Stone, we love anything mysterious and our range of stone gargoyles is perfect for this. Finding the perfect garden backdrop can be difficult, especially as they aren’t always attached to the house you live in. Don’t let this hold you back, though! Whatever outdoor space you have, you can nurture, cultivate and design into the garden of your dreams.

With a little bit of creativity, some careful planning and a lot of green fingers, you can completely transform your garden into an outdoor living space you won’t want to miss out on. Remember, though, no garden is complete without some flowers and shrubbery, perhaps some garden ornaments and somewhere to sit – like a stone bench or decking dining area.

Choose your Garden Essentials

Consider how you would like your ideal garden to look; is it kept neat and tidy, each plant neatly in its place, or is it a little wild with running flowers and mixed borders? Consider the colours you want to see throughout the year when buying your flowers, seed and evergreens to break it all up.

Choose your focal point, whether that is some ornamental stoneware, a water feature or a statue. Perhaps a gazebo covered in honeysuckle or a stone bench under your favourite tree surrounded by flowers and nature. A strong and elegant statue nestled in amongst your flowerbeds is a great accent to either situation; similarly, a statue and a few select stepping stones can take centre stage nicely, too.

Caring for your Garden

The hard work is done and dusted, the pruning and preening has been sorted, and your garden stoneware fits in perfectly. All that is left to take care of now is the upkeep and maintenance.

Caring for your lawn, flowers and plants is something best left to the experts, so have a look at some smart tipshere.
